As part of our effort to encourage active gameplay in Vitare, we have been working on expanding our money and skills systems in-game. We want skills to feel rewarding, engaging and unique, and active skills is the first step on this journey.
Active skills will be launching in the Wednesday 29th July update. These do ask a little more of you, but rewards your activity by allowing you to get to the top skill levels and will give you a speed boost for doing so.
Let's dig in and share more!
Passive Skilling
Bookshelves and mirrors work exactly as they always have where you can start the interaction and - as long as you remain active - you can skill up. This allows you to do other things like chatting to others or decorating!
We have made a change where you can only get to Level 15 with these objects. We would value your feedback on this.
This has been done because we feel the very top skill levels should require more work and ensure we start adding some variability into the game. For example, some people may put more effort into being great at engineering or others will be the best at cooking.
Active Skilling
Some objects, like the stove, the workbench and the lectern, now let you skill!
Every so often a prompt pops up above the object. Similar to our money object scenarios, these are tailored for skill objects and are even more interactive. You may need to rapidly click to chop onions, click and hold to prepare something, or select the correct choice.
Keep answering them and you build up your skilling speed and this will increase how fast you learn. An active money object can be up to 2x faster than passive skills.
You do not start at full boosted speed - it builds over your first few correct answers from the current room rate, and then holds there for as long as you keep up.
How much faster could it be?
Picture a Skills lot with you and three friends, all working on the same skill, with a few skill objects in the room. Going from level 5 to level 6 looks like this:
| Level 5 → 6 (Skills lot, 4 skillers) | Time |
|---|---|
| Book (relaxed) | ~25 mins |
| Active object | ~15 mins |
The gap gets bigger the higher you climb, because later levels take a lot longer and the Flow warm-up stops mattering:
| Level 14 → 15 (same lot) | Time |
|---|---|
| Book (relaxed) | ~2.5 hours |
| Active object | ~1 hour 20 mins |
Active skilling saves you around a third on the short early levels, and closer to half on the long later ones. In other words, it helps most exactly when the grind starts to bite.
What happens if you ignore prompts on an active object?
An active skilling object is never slower than a passive object. If you miss a few prompts, your skill speed will reduce to the same speed as the rest of the room.
Ignore it for long enough, though, and things go wrong. The object will warn you and you'll see visual signs. Keep ignoring it and your skilling session may have a disastrous (and slightly humorous) end! You will not lose any skill progress if this happens.
Feedback welcome
We are really intrigued to hear your feedback on this and understand this does change how skilling has been working. As we are in Beta, we are constantly trying to find ways to improve mechanics and gameplay for the long-term whilst honouring the time investment you've put into these systems.
This is one of the first steps we are making to expand the skills system. Other items on the roadmap include skill pathways with unique benefits, increasing the skill levels, and skill caps so that everyone in the world of Vitare has a truly unique collection of skills and variability with different abilities.
